Really haven’t had a great deal of time to play with my new Macro lens, just 10 minutes here or there when Charlie (and Erika) allow it. So far I have worked out that macro photography is totally different from not macro photography. I have had quick experiments with tripod and without and close up to very very close up… Haven’t got many good shots to show yet. Actually, none I am really happy with at all!

Some advice I have got though is to use the tripod wherever possible, as the Nikon 105mm is pretty heavy and unless you have a really steady hand you will get blur, especially focusing 1:1. I’ve been using a really big aperture, but was recommended to use around 8. So I’ll give those tips a go next time.

Nice lens though, I like this one. Not really very ‘macro’ but closer up than I can get with a normal lens.

Not very well composed, if thats the right word. I think I have the focus points all in the wrong place. Maybe a smaller aperture would work better.

Well the decision was taken out of my hands. Last night I got my birthday present early, a 105mm nikkor micro lens! Bit spoilt, but that’s ok, I am happy to be spoilt.

Now I just need Charlie to be a perfectly well behaved 11 day old bubba so I can go play with my new toy!

This is Charlie with a squished nose, he is 6 days old here, and the reason I haven’t been playing with my camera much. Actually I have been, I have just been taking photos of him. Mostly snapshot ones so far, but when life settles into a routine again I’ll practise my baby photo taking skills!

For some reason this photo keeps uploading sideways. So if you are on a laptop the turn it to the side to see it properly.

Taken late afternoon. Camera says 7.09pm but I didn’t think it was that late. Could have been though. Probably was because the light is so much better than the ones I took earlier in the day.

Cropped slightly.

Another of the Pacific Coast Iris from the Tempo Two seed. I love Iris season. Nothing really special about this shot. To me there is, because it is an Iris… The colour is pretty much accurate to the actual flower, which is what I like best about it. And I seem to have trouble with whites and yellows and lighter colours. Nine times out of ten they come out all washed out or I just can’t get the exposure right and they just glare, especially with whites…

A friend asked me to take photos of her son’s birthday party on the weekend. No one has ever asked me to take photos for them before, especially at a party, where you get one shot at it. I am used to taking photos of stationary objects, that don’t run and jump about. Flowers are great subjects, they stay in the one place and don’t make life hard!

Anyway, I did some googling on taking photos at kids partys and got a few tips. The thing I wasn’t sure about was it was going to be inside because of the weather, and all my indoor photos usually turn out crap. I took my 24mm f2.8 lens along too, just incase the light was really bad. I ended up just sticking to the 18-105mm Nikon and it was ok. Had to boost up the ISO which has made them a bit grainy, but not too bad.

Overall I was pretty happy with what I got. I think I took about 200 odd photos, and I picked out about 70ish that I thought were ok, and maybe about 15-20 that I really liked. I had to adjust the exposure a bit, and could probably do a lot more to the levels to make them better, but I don’t like to play around with them on the computer too much.
